KAʻŪ KEIKI WITH DISABILITIES ARE WELCOME AT SURFERS HEALING CAMP. The annual Surfers Healing Camp for children with autism and other disabilities will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Richardson Ocean Park in Hilo. Volunteers are also welcomed. To register a child and learn more about the camp, visit www.surfershealing.org. Space is limited, and spots fill up fast. 

    Now in its 16th year, the Surfers Healing Hawai'i Chapter provides children with disabilities and their families with the experience of surfing with professionals under supervised conditions. Knowledgeable surfing instructors, surfboards and U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vests will be provided at no charge. Complimentary drinks, snacks and lunches will be offered to participating children and their families.

    An estimated 200 people, including approximately 60 keiki, are expected to participate in the Hilo camp. Surfers Healing Camps are held throughout the world, providing more than 5,000 children annually with the opportunity to try surfing.

Volunteers help in the following service areas: Beach set-up, Registration table, T-Shirt sales table, Goodie bag distribution, Food/refreshments serving, Medal distribution, Family relations (working the beach to help with questions, guide families), Life vest station, Mid beach – walk kids to surfers/water line, Water line – assist surfers with kids on and off boards, loading kids, Swimmers to catch runaway boards, Beach clean-up and EMS/First Aid.     Surfers Healing is a national organization started 26 years ago in California to share the joy of surfing with those who otherwise would not have the opportunity to surf. Surfers Healing Hawai'i Island chapter is sponsoring this event. Additional support is being provided through a partnership with the County of Hawai'i Department of Parks & Recreation, The Eddie Aikau Foundation, Somers West, Bay View Banyan and Double Good.

VOLCANO ARTIST IRA ONO'S TIKI SERIES 1 is among the art selected for Artists of Hawai'i Biennial 2024 show at Downtown Art Center in Honolulu. The exhibit is through Dec. 21 and is "one of Hawai'i's largest and longest-running juried shows designed to showcase the best of Hawai'i's contemporary art," says a statement from Ono.

    Juror is Tom Klobe, University of Hawai'i Manoa Art Department professor emeritus. He said,

"Art must communicate on two levels, the visual and the conceptual, and it is the interaction of these two forces that serve as the primary determinant in selection. Technical skill can be learned, but technical proficiency alone is not enough. The result must be unique, introspective, and distinctive. I look for artistic merit, passion, honesty, and a confidence displayed by the artist that indicates mastery of the subject, materials, and technique. But the works have to appeal to the mind as well as the eye."

    Ono's work is also on display at Volcano Garden Arts at 19-3834 Old Volcano Rd. It is one of the locations of Volcano Village 38th Artists Hui Studio Tour & Sale from Friday Nov. 29 through Sunday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See volcanovillageartistshui.com.

KĪLAUEA MILITARY CAMP WILL HOST VETERANS DAY observance and celebration with ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11. Keynote speaker will be Lt. Col. Christopher Marquez, Commander of Pōhakuloa Training Area.

    Lunch will be at Crater Rim Cafe from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a Veterans Expo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The lunch costs $38 per person for adults and $19 for Keiki ten years and under. Reservations can be made and paid for by calling 808-967-8333.

KAʻŪ MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY WILL CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY, on Monday, Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a display of Kaʻū veterans photos and other memorabilia at Nāʻālehu Park next to the World War II Veterans Memorial.

OKK WILL CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY ON MONDAY, NOV. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free lunch for veterans and their families, with music by Keoki Soriano. Venue is the 'O Ka'ū Kākou Market in Nāʻālehu.
