Kahele talked about Ka Lae and Pōhue, Honomolino and Kapua Bays as significant sites to preserve. He also described Ala Kahakai Trail running through the proposed National Heritage Area.
Paʻa Pono Miloliʻi, a 40-year old non-profit, would be the community sponsor of the National Heritage Area, working with the Department of Interior, said Kahele. Other support comes from Ala Kahakai Trail Association, Hawaiʻi Island Land Trust, Trust for Public Land, La'i'opua Homestead Association, The Nature Conservancy, Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce and state Department of Land & Natural Resources. Congressman Ed Case is co-sponsor of the measure.
Kahele earlier explained that the land in the National Heritage Area would remain with its current owners and federal funding would be available to help protect it as well as assist with appropriate economic development related to preservation of its numerous cultural sites, wildlife habitat and ten miles of undeveloped coastline.
"This unique region boasts numerous intact and significant native Hawaiian cultural sites that date to pre-western contact, ten miles of undeveloped coastline, and intact marine and terrestrial ecosystems that support dozens of threatened and endangered plant and animal species," said Kahele. "Many native Hawaiian residents share a strong connection to this place through generations of stewardship, cultural practices and traditions." Kahele described Pōhue Bay as "one of the few untouched places in Hawaiʻi. This area is home to a number of historic trails, heiau – or sacred sites and temples, petroglyphs and other cultural features, and Pōhue Bay is also a prime nesting point, an area for the endangered hawksbill sea turtle."
Kahele described Honomalino as "a black sand beach and is one of the most picturesque sites on the island of Hawai'i." He said "Ka Lae is already a registered National Historic Landmark District and is the site of one of the earliest settlements in the Hawaiian islands."
He said the proposed National Heritage Area is rich with petroglyphs, "carvings by the ancient Hawaiians that drew pictures into the rocks. There are heiau, otherwise known as ancient temples, burial sites, caves and ancient trails and house sites, fully preserved holua slide – or a Hawaiian sled – at Ahole near Kapua Bay."

Kahele described the 175 mile Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. "This is a trail that runs more than half of the coastline on the island of Hawaiʻi. The trail enables – and enabled in the past – the gathering of food and water and harvesting of materials and shelter, and it is literally a stone trail that goes for at least 100 miles from North Kona all the way down the South Kona. And you could walk it, right in between sharp and very rugged and barren lava fields, on the South Kona coastline."

BODYCAM VIDEO with sounds of police gunfire that killed a man found in an uninhabited house in Hilo on Friday has been released by the county Police Department. While the noise of the gunshots are captured in the video, it largely focuses on the injuries of the police officer who was stabbed when police broke down a bedroom door and the man who was allegedly illegally inhabiting the place, stabbed the police officer.
After lunging at police with the knife, the unidentified man, of no known address, was killed by police. The officer who fired the fatal shot is on administrative leave. The police officer who was stabbed was treated at Hilo Medical Center.
A DOWNED POWER POLE CUT OFF HWY 11 IN BOTH DIRECTIONS between the 103 and 105 mile marker near Ho'okena on Sunday night. A message from Hawai'i Police Department said the Hawaiian Electric crew was on scene but could not remove the pole until Monday. Traffic is cut off between Kaʻū and Kona and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route. Some motorists were expected to be stranded overnight or drive around the island to reach their destination.

JUNETEENTH, A NEW FEDERAL HOLIDAY, June 19, is recognized in Hawai'i as a time of remembrance but not a state worker holiday. The national Junteenth holiday commemorates the end of slavery in 1865 , the date in which the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation became known and recognized everywhere in the U.S.
To start this new holiday, most federal workers were given a day off on Friday, June 18. One exception was the U.S. Postal Service, which continued its work on Friday and Saturday.

Applicants must be a Hawaiʻi Island resident, at least 18 years old, lost income or work hours due to COVID-19, and not previously received assistance from other COVID-19 federal or state-funded programs. Funded by CARES Act and distributed by Hawaiʻi County Economic Opportunity Council, required documents for application are government-issued identification, income verification documents for all household members, utility statement with address of services, lease/rental agreement or mortgage document, and proof of hardship. QUALIFY TO BECOME A BEGINNING FARMER OR RANCHER and receive benefits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture To qualify for status as a beginning farmer or rancher: Applicants must be an individual. Business entities may receive benefits only if all of the substantial beneficial interest holders (ten percent or more) of the business entity qualify as beginning farmers or ranchers. For example, a son moves home to take over the family farm and incorporates with his spouse and neither have previous farming experience. Their corporation would qualify as a beginning farmer/rancher. However, if a son moves home and forms a corporation with his father, who has had an insurable interest in crops or livestock for more than five crop years, the corporation cannot receive beginning farmer and rancher benefits. Although the son qualifies as a beginning farmer or rancher, the father does not so the corporation cannot receive benefits.
Applicants must not have actively operated and managed a farm or ranch anywhere, with an insurable interest in any crop or livestock for more than five crop years (ten years for Whole-Farm Revenue Protection). This includes an insurable interest as an individual or as a substantial beneficial interest holder (ten percent or more) in another person who has an insurable interest in any crop or livestock. Applicants may exclude a crop year's insurable interest if they were under the age of 18, enrolled in post-secondary studies (not to exceed five crop years) or on active duty in the U.S. military.
