THE FIRST MAJOR EXPORT FROM HAWAI'I WAS PA'AKAI - SALT, NOT SUGAR. After Dark in the Park this Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Kīlauea Visitor Center auditorium in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park features the story of salt exported first, ahead of sugar, pineapples and sandalwood.
    Join archeologist and manager of the parkʻs Cultural Resources program, Summer Roper Todd, as she illustrates the footsteps of traditional Hawaiian salt gatherers in her presentation, Salt Gatherers of Hawai'i. She will tell the tale: By 1786, numerous ships stopped in Hawai‘i to provision and created a tremendous demand for paʻakai, Hawaiian sea salt. Hawaiian paʻakai allowed for the preservation of fish and meat, and enabled Hawaiians to populate districts less suited for agriculture.
    The community gathering is part of Hawai‘i Volcanoes’ ongoing After Dark in the Park programs and is co-sponsored by the Friends of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Free, but park entrance fees apply.

SOME FILIPINO RESIDENTS OF KAʻŪ HAVE DUAL CITIZENSHIPS. OTHERS HAVE ONE. The Hawai'i Filipino Business Economic Council will host a Zoom meeting on Dual Citizenship Righta &Responsibilityes and re-acquiring Philippine-cittzenship. It takes place on Tuesday, June 18 at 4 p.m., June 19 at 10 a.m. in the Philippines
    A message from the organizations asks, "If yo now have two passports- one from the USA and another from the Philippines, who would you pledge allegiance to? As a dual citizen, do you participate i the election process in both nations> Share your views."
   Panelists will include Vice Consulate General Leizel Caasi who works at the Philippine Consulate

General as Head of the Culture Diplomacy, Dual Citizenship, Notarists and Gender and Development sections. Another is Victor Gregor Limon, an urban planner and Secretary-General of Hawai'i Filipinos for Truth, Justice and Democracy. It advocates for greater in engagement with social issues back home and around the world. He was a founding member of Anakbayan, which advocates for democracy in thed Philippines. He works for City & County of Honolulu in its Offie of Climate Change, Sustainability an Resiliency.

    The third panelist is Dwight de Leon, a well known Filipino broadcast journalist who covers the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos, Jr, the Malacanang and Commission on Elections for Rappler, a Philippines news organization. Moderator is Divina Telan Robillard, who has taught nursing in Hawai'i and served in numerous community organizations here. She is a dual citizen.

THE 2024 CULTURAL FESTIVAL AT KAHUKU UNIT of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has announced its schedule for Saturday, July 20 from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    At 9:45 a.m. will be Opening protocol: kani ka pū, oli E Ho Mai.
    At 10 a.m., Kumu Alii Keanaaina and Hālau Kaleilaniakealii will perform hula.
    At 11 a.m. will be the music of Keaīwa with Demetrius Oliveira and Gene Beck.
   At noon will by hula with Kumu Lori Lei Shirakawa and Lori Lei's Hula Studio.
   At 1 p.m. award winning vocalist Kenneth Makuakāne will perform.

   At 2 p.m. will be The Pandanus Club with Roddy Lopez an dAlden Kai'aokamalie.

    The closing with Hawai'i Aloha will be at 2:45 p.m. 

    The Cultural Festival is free and co-sponsored by Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hawai'i Pacific Parks Association and Friends of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
