The federal Department of Agriculture will hold a workshop for coffee farmers, food growers, ranchers and other agriculturalists this Friday, June 21 at Pāhala Community Center at 3 p.m. A Spanish translator will be provided. USDA photo

KAʻŪ COFFEE GROWERS, FARMERS & RANCHERS RESOURCE WORKSHOP, sponsored by U.S. Department of Agriculture, is this Friday, June 21, 3 p,m. to 5 p.m. at Pāhala Community Center. USDA invites coffee growers and other agricultural producers to learn about USDA programs and practices at the free session. Pāhala Community Center is at 96-1149 Kamani St.
    Representatives with USDA agencies – the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Rural Development – and the Kaʻū Soil & Water Conservation District will provide presentations and encourage attendees to ask questions. A Spanish language interpreter will also be available. Light refreshments will be provided.

SOTO NO MICHI AIKIDO - PĀHALA DOJO members and families recently held ceremonies to promote the  ranks of students, based on their demonstration of technical skills, attitude and attendance. 

    Kaila Grace achieved Brown Belt. Anaiya Gouveia achieved Orange Belt. Florida Ortega achieved Yellow Belt, Baxton Ortega achieved Yellow Belt and Kaiko'o Ka'awa Davis achieved Yellow Belt.
     The ceremony was held on June 13. Chief Sensei Alan Moores and Sensei Gabriel Cuevas sent congratulations and mahalo to all who supported the event.            

    No Michi Aikido-Pāhala Dojo classes are held in the Pāhala Hongwanji Japanese schoolhouse.

    Classes are Thursdays and Sundays from 4:30 p.m. to 6  p.m. Call Sensei

THE AUCTION AND FUNDRAISER FOR DOG RESCUERS HAS BEEN CANCELLED. It was scheduled for Saturday, July 13 at Ocean View Community Center.
    Sharman O'Shea, of the non-profit Alanui O Ka'u, released the following statement: "The five dog rescue organizations that chose to use our 501(C)(3) nonprofit to raise funds are Dog Days of Summer, Pueo Puppy Sanctuary, Friends of the Menehune, Ocean View Dog Rescue and Hibiscus Haven. Our agreement was to retain 10% of the donations as the administrative fee to cover our costs. However. they have decided to raise money on their own. Please contact them directly. All donations received by our nonprofit will be returned to donors. Mahalo."
    Under the non profit Alanui O  Kaʻū, O'Shea stewards the historic grounds and stone ruins of the Catholic Church at Na'ohulelua on Kama'oa Road, which fell down in the earthquake of 1868. A resident of Kaʻū for ten years, since moving here from O'ahu, O'Shea and the organization grow native and food plants and open the historic place by appointment and on scheduled dates.
   Alanui O Kaʻū states its mission is "to foster economic vitality through community-based economic development, planning, programs and education." It sponsored a garden bed initiative to grow food during COVID, an entrepreneur mentorship program for youth and the garden restoration project at Na'ohulelua. Last

Saturday. Alanui held a Kukui Tree Giveaway and also offered moringa and rare and endangered plants at Na'ohulelua.
    O'Shea and Alanui are also a fiscal sponsor of the Ocean View Home School Association. Alanui was fiscal sponsor of the Carol Maikalani Hannum Foundation for Arts, Culture & Healing Live Auction Benefit at Ocean View Community Center in May. It also is sponsor of the upcoming  Kaʻū Wellness Festival at Ocean View Community Center on Sept. 21.
