The half-marathon will begin at 7 a.m. The 5K will start shortly after at the same location. The course will take runners from the Volcano School up Wright Road. Road closures may be expected around the start of the event near the School. This race is being directed by Hawai'i Island Racers. Their goal is to bring business to the Volcano area while providing a low cost running event for the community. In addition, the race will be donating a portion of its proceeds to the Volcano community.
The race has been approved by the County and will follow strict Covid regulations and Hawai'i Island Racers’ Mitigation Plan. It was cancelled last year, due to the pandemic.

THE STATE SENATE WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE has sent words of support to Kaʻū High School, in anticipation of its opening a new academy on Aug. 4. After visiting with a contingent from the Hawai‘i Legislature and business community on June 15, state Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz, Chair
of the Senate Committee on Ways & Means,
called the visit “fruitful.” He wrote, “We appreciate your time and willingness to share
about your school facilities and the exciting
and very promising work occurring with the
Ka‘ū students in our Ag/Entrepreneurship
pathway.”
Among the business leaders who attended were representatives of Y. Hata &
Co., the state’s largest locally owned and
operated food distribution entity. They said
they are very excited with the focus on agriculture and entrepreneurial skills planned
for Ka‘ū High and are eager to buy more
locally produced fresh foods. Y. Hata was
founded in 1913.

The next community volunteer day for the school farm set for Saturday, July 31 from 9 a.m. to noon. The workday event is a part of the 4th Annual Hawai‘i Island Community Food Summit, sponsored by Hawai‘i Island School Garden Network and Hawai‘i Island Food Alliance. Apply for Utility Assistance to pay for electricity, non-government water, or gas. Applicants must be a Hawaiʻi Island resident, at least 18 years old, lost income or work hours due to COVID-19, and not previously received assistance from other COVID-19 federal or state-funded programs. Funded by CARES Act and distributed by Hawaiʻi County Economic Opportunity Council, required documents for application are government-issued identification, income verification documents for all household members, utility statement with address of services, lease/rental agreement or mortgage document, and proof of hardship. QUALIFY TO BECOME A BEGINNING FARMER OR RANCHER and receive benefits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture To qualify for status as a beginning farmer or rancher: Applicants must be an individual. Business entities may receive benefits only if all of the substantial beneficial interest holders (ten percent or more) of the business entity qualify as beginning farmers or ranchers. For example, a son moves home to take over the family farm and incorporates with his spouse and neither have previous farming experience. Their corporation would qualify as a beginning farmer/rancher. However, if a son moves home and forms a corporation with his father, who has had an insurable interest in crops or livestock for more than five crop years, the corporation cannot receive beginning farmer and rancher benefits. Although the son qualifies as a beginning farmer or rancher, the father does not so the corporation cannot receive benefits.
Applicants must not have actively operated and managed a farm or ranch anywhere, with an insurable interest in any crop or livestock for more than five crop years (ten years for Whole-Farm Revenue Protection). This includes an insurable interest as an individual or as a substantial beneficial interest holder (ten percent or more) in another person who has an insurable interest in any crop or livestock. Applicants may exclude a crop year's insurable interest if they were under the age of 18, enrolled in post-secondary studies (not to exceed five crop years) or on active duty in the U.S. military.
