A fire was reported at Pohue Bay with helicopter water crews and ground crews responding.

A FIRE AT POHUE BAY WAS REPORTED Sunday afternoon, followed by a helicopter dropping water there. According to community reports, smoke was seen coming from the western edge of the bay. Two fire trucks were seen going toward the fire and later leaving. The fire appeared to be out by about 5 p.m.. Apparently none of the palm trees at Pohue Bay burned.
    The lands at Kahuku-Pohue Bay are owned by the National Park Service which recently acquired the more-than 16,000 acres for Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, which has involved the public in making a plan for the place to allow access while protecting resources.

Hawai'i Fire Fighters Association endorses Jeanné Kapela for state House of Representatives.

HAWAI'I FIRE FIGHTERS ASSOCIATION has endorsed Jeanné Kapela to serve all of Kaʻū into Kona as member of the state House of Representatives. The Democrat is the incumbent and her House district has been expanded from serving Honu'apo into Kona to serve South Kona and all of Kaʻū into Volcano.
    Kapela sent out a message on Sunday saying, "We never expect emergencies to happen. When they do, though, we can count on our community's first responders to assist us in recovering our health, rebuilding our neighborhoods, and restoring our spirit. That is why I am proud to be endorsed by the Hawai'i Fire Fighters Association in my campaign for reelection. I am honored to be supported by the people who are always ready to rush into danger to protect our lives and livelihoods.
    "Just as they help us to survive, we need to ensure that our first responders are given a chance to thrive. That is why I am devoted to championing the interests of those who risk their lives to extinguish burning crises when they arise. Mahalo to the first responders who keep our community safe and strong. As your representative, I will always strive to uplift your well-being."

PUBLIC TRASH TRANSFER STATIONS AROUND THE ISLAND REOPENED SATURDAY AND

SUNDAY after being closed Friday, during the Ironman Triathalon events. The women's event was held Thursday and the Men's event on Saturday.
    In addition to transfer stations on Friday, West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill (Pu‘uanahulu) and Organics Facility and the Kealakehe Recycling & Transfer Station, Reuse Center, and Scrap Metal recycling were closed Thursday and Saturday. Workers at the transfer stations said the reason for the closure was the traffic situation in the Kona area during the three days of events.

     The Ironman is one of the world's most prestigious triathlons and involves Hwy 11 and other roads on the westside of the island for the running and bicycling events and the Kona Pier area for the swimming event. It draws thousands of people to see it.

AN UPDATE ON MEDICARE ENROLLMENT WILL BE HELD IN OCEAN VIEW. Hui Malama Ka'ū is hosting a talk-story for kupuna to learn about the current open enrollment period for Medicare on Thursday, Oct. 20 beginning at 9 a.m. at St. Jude's Episocopal Church.      Hui Malama will also provide a limited number of Kupuna Kare Packages, with fresh 'ai - food from the 'aina, 'uala pulapula - sweet potato slips to plant and other items, according to Hui Malama volunteer Shauna Falgout.
