Kaʻū High graduates celebrated their accomplishments this weekend as the school plans
to return students and teachers to full time on campus beginning Aug. 3. Photo by Julia Neal

KAʻŪ HIGH students celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2021 this weekend. The school next turns its focus to students returning to campus full time beginning Aug. 3. The state Department of Education sent a letter to parents and guardians, penned by statewide Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto. She wrote:
Stormy Petitt, of Ocean View, is Kaʻū High School's Valedictorian
for 2021. Check in soon for her writings about high school
and her future. Photo by Julia Neal
"For the 2021-22 school year scheduled to begin on Aug. 3, all HIDOE schools will be fully open for daily, in-person learning. This includes resuming co-curricular and extracurricular activities such as clubs, band and athletics." The letter to families says, "I would like to mahalo you for being a partner in your child's education in a very challenging school year. ... Improving conditions in our communities along with a growing body of science-backed research and updated health guidance have allowed us to increase in-person learning opportunities ovver th past two months at our elementary schools." She said , "it has been a great source of joy to hear the sounds of students engaged in learning and interacting with their peers and teachers again."
Kishimoto said the schools "have proven to be safe spaces throughout this crisis. Despite more than 800 cases reported by schools and offices since June 2020, consistent adherence to safety protocols has meant that - to date - no transmission of the virus has occurred at a Hawaiʻi State Department of Education facility."
The superintendent credits following protocols that directed students and staff to: stay home when sick, consistent mask-wearing, and proper hand hygiene.
She pointed to the new "layer of protection with COVID vaccinations more widely available and the recent approval of the vaccine for adolescents ages 12 and older.
"All of our high schools have been paired with health care providers to offer vaccinations to interested students and families, and we are now focusing on our middle school campuses. Additionally the Department is finalizing plans for weekly COVID testing at select pilot schools to further contain spread in our school communities."

St. Jude's in Ocean View reopens its shower ministry for those who need a place to bathe.
It has been closed during the pandemic and reopens June 5. Photo from St. Jude's
THE SHOWER MINISTRY AT ST. JUDE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH REOPENS Saturday, June 5 after being closed during the pandemic. According to the latest church newsletter, hours will be 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Sign up by 11:30 am to receive a hot shower. A mask must be worn until being in the shower stall and must be worn leaving the shower stall. Temperatures will be taken and social distancing required. A 6 ft. table will be manned by a volunteer at one end for signing up. The shower client will stand at the other end, give their name and be seated.
Only one shower stall will be used at a time so that the other stall can be cleaned with disinfectant. Towel, shampoo, and body wash will be placed in the shower instead of on the table. In order to offer many showers as possible, there will be a 15 min. time limit for each shower. When finishing each shower and client is ready to leave the stall, replace mask and put towel in the bin for washing and trash into the receptacle.  Hot dogs will be served on Saturday, June 5.
The newsletter says the church announced the reopening "with great joy.... We have been very sad during this time that the showers have been closed....We look forward to welcoming our shower family home and providing this service once again."  For more, contact Cordelia Burt at 939-7555.
St. Jude's is located at 92-8606 Paradise Circle in Ocean View.

AGRICULTURE
QUALIFY TO BECOME A BEGINNING FARMER OR RANCHER and receive benefits from the U.S. Department of Agriculture To qualify for status as a beginning farmer or rancher: Applicants must be an individual. Business entities may receive benefits only if all of the substantial beneficial interest holders (ten percent or more) of the business entity qualify as beginning farmers or ranchers. For example, a son moves home to take over the family farm and incorporates with his spouse and neither have previous farming experience. Their corporation would qualify as a beginning farmer/rancher. However, if a son moves home and forms a corporation with his father, who has had an insurable interest in crops or livestock for more than five crop years, the corporation cannot receive beginning farmer and rancher benefits. Although the son qualifies as a beginning farmer or rancher, the father does not so the corporation cannot receive benefits.
Applicants must not have actively operated and managed a farm or ranch anywhere, with an insurable interest in any crop or livestock for more than five crop years (ten years for Whole-Farm Revenue Protection). This includes an insurable interest as an individual or as a substantial beneficial interest holder (ten percent or more) in another person who has an insurable interest in any crop or livestock. Applicants may exclude a crop year's insurable interest if they were under the age of 18, enrolled in post-secondary studies (not to exceed five crop years) or on active duty in the U.S. military.
