MORE THAN 300 KEIKI and parents came to Hana Hou Restaurant in Na`alehu last night to enjoy a free Christmas feast and gift giving. More than 30 bikes and many other presents were distributed. Children met Santa for photos and Christmas requests. The event is hosted annually by Hana Hou Restaurant.
E HO’OMALU O HAWAI`I is the name of the gathering of people to meet Governor Neil Abercrombie this Sunday, December 12 at 10 a.m. at Pahala Plantation House. E Ho`omalu O Hawai`i means not only to protect the agricultural lands, forest and culture, but also the health of the people, and Governor Abercrombie is asking the community to bring three cans of food or cash donations to be disturbed to local food banks. These will be accepted when entering the grounds of Pahala Plantation House.
CONGRESSWOMAN MAZIE HIRONO last night voted to support legislation to help undocumented young people who are students to remain in the country. She said she has listened to numerous stories in Hawai`i about young adults who came to the islands as children and are facing the nightmare of deportation. Called the DREAM act, the legislation gives young adults the chance to stay if they complete two years at a four-year institution of higher learning or serve two years in the Armed Forces. The bill now goes to the Senate.
KA`U COFFEE IS going to Washington, D.C. again, this time for a Taste of the States reception for members of Congress hosted by the American Farm Bureau Federation on Tuesday, December 14. Hawai`i Farm Bureau Vice President Chris Manfredi, who is also president of the Ka`u Farm Bureau, will represent Hawai`i at the national Resolutions meeting of the Farm Bureau where the Farm Bureau works on proposed legislation for Congress. The coffee to be showcased will come from the Ka`u Coffee Co-op as it did when Ka`u Coffee was the official drink of an inauguration gala for President Barack Obama in 2009.
IN SPORTS, the Ka`u High girls Varsity basketball team won their first season game against Pahoa on home turf this week. The Daggers were no match for the Trojans, who already scored 40 points to Pahoa's 11 at the half. Due to their overwhelming lead, Ka`u coach Mark Pocock instructed the girls not to press the ball in the second half. The Trojans ended the game with a 59-23 victory.
THIS WAS JUST one of three season openers. Ka`u Trojan Varsity soccer teams took on the Kamehameha Warriors. A young team with lots of new talent, the Trojan wahine battled the Warriors, but were defeated 10-1. During the second half, Marley Strand-Nicolaisen, a Ka`u High sophomore, blasted the ball from 40 yards out, sinking it in the top right corner of the goal.
TROJAN BOYS also hustled, keeping the Warriors on their toes and scoreless for the first 25 minutes. However, the seasoned Warriors, with a team twice the size of the Trojans, came out victorious, 6-0.
TROJAN SOCCER PLAYERS, Amery Silva and Kaila Olson, immediately switched gears following their match to suit up for the Varsity basketball girls game. Talk about mega-athletes.
OUR CHRISTMAS GIFT TO YOU is a concert to be performed tomorrow night at Discovery Harbour Community Hall at 7 p.m. Ka`u School of the Arts presents its annual, free holiday concert.
